Here's an e-mail I sent to the group before I got this link - I probably should have posted the comments here. Gary, Bob, and Mike, OK, after looking at the notes from yesterday’s meeting I’m a little unclear who’s doing what. Gary are you included forest management and utilization in your proposal? I thought we were lumping them together but the notes don’t really imply that… (I think that’d be great if you’re willing). The reason I asked. Yesterday, Charlie Blinn, Bob Seavey, Eli Sagor, and I met with some folks from the DNR (Keith Jacobson, Mark Lindquist, and Barb Spears) about ash (and other invasive species) utilization and silvicutlural management. As a result of this meeting we have several action items, include talking with you about getting a few things included in our rapid response proposal. Here are our thoughts:
Hire a consultant or student to do a gap analysis (will need to start with an inventory of current data, likely with several phone calls to researchers, etc in MI, IN, and OH) on ash utilization within in forest in the wake of EAB and forest silviculture with EAB (likely a through review of SLAM – Slow Ash Mortality).
A strategic look at wood boilers in the state and their potential capacity.
Do you think these can be included in our rapid response proposal? And who is leading that effort???? Thanks all, Angie PS- The DNR would be happy to write a letter of support for our proposal, just need to get them a template.
I also think Mel's idea of having a group of us go to MI to look at their active management after the gap assessment is done is a great idea. We can build our program from there.
