Subject:
Ash management in forests and woodlands of Minnesota

Needs:

Literature review on ash management.
What recommendations are current for management of ash for Minnesota's Forest types.
What recommendations have recently been developed in relation to management of ash forests threatened by EAB

Research questions to address:
Given various rates of spread and the elimination of ash from Minnesota's forests how will the ecosystem adapt to the loss of this species. Is ash a keystone species? Can we quantify the importance of this species and make some educated guesses as to how the ecosytem will adapt?

Actions:
Convene a panel of silviculturists. ecologists, biologists, practicing foresters and landowners from Minnesota and other states to address these questions. Summarize the results. Hold a meeting in Minnesota. Hold a meeting in Michigan and tour affected areas.

Evaluation:
Success will be
  • New ideas and thoughts about approach to EAB and potentially other invasives that threaten to eliminate entire species from the landscape.
  • Validation or refutation of the assumptions made that EAB will wipe out ash as an important tree species in Minnesota.
  • A model to address similar but as yet unknown future invasive species
  • A set of guidelines, that have been vetted by experts, practicioners and landowners, for landowners to use and follow to manage the threat and expected impacts of EAB in Minnesota's woodlands

Budget:
Travel for invited speakers
Literature review --students, interns
One or more meetings to gather information in Minnesota
